CLINICAL EPIDEMIOLOGY IN CRC Print

The Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU) in CRC was established in response to the increasing request for assistance from clinicians, health managers and policy makers in conducting non experimental clinical/patient oriented studies.

These include projects such as:

• Measures of disease burden like disease incidence and prevalence rates.
• Measures of disease management like diagnostic accuracy, treatment compliance, treatment access and disease prognosis.
• Measures of disease outcomes such as mortality, treatment modified life expectancy, patients’ quality of life (QOL) and patients’ reported outcomes (PRO).

The CEU also provides the functional capacity for Ministry of Health (MOH) to obtain the relevant information on key diseases in Malaysia.

It strives to increase our understanding of existing health problems; its magnitude, geographic and temporal trends, its risk factors, as well as its management and outcomes.

Clinical Epidemiology Unit is subdivided into two; the Research arm and the Patient Registry arm.

The Research arm covers a variety of observational research designs such as:

• Cross sectional design to describe disease frequencies or presentations often on the basis of multi clinic or multi hospital based level
• Case control or cohort design to investigate disease risk factor.
• Single arm or Non randomized control studies on treatment effectiveness in real life setting.
• Studies of Diagnostic Accuracies to evaluate new tests for disease diagnosis.
• Studies of Disease Prognosis to develop or validate clinical prediction rules.
• Reliability and validity studies of various research instruments
